삶이 날마다 줄어들어 남은 몫이 작아진다는 사실과 함께, 또 하나를 생각해야 한다. 더 오래 산다 해도 사물을 이해하는 힘이 충분히 남아 있을지, 신과 인간의 일에 관한 지식을 얻으려 깊이 생각하는 능력을 유지할지는 매우 불확실하다. 늙어 정신이 흐려지기 시작하면 땀을 흘리고 영양을 섭취하며 상상하고 욕구하는 등의 기능은 사라지지 않겠지만, 스스로의 힘을 쓰고 의무를 다하며 모든 인상을 분명히 구별하고 이제 삶을 떠나야 하는지 판단하는 능력은 이미 사라져 있다. 이처럼 훈련된 이성이 꼭 필요한 능력들이 사라지는 것이다. 그러니 서둘러야 한다. 날마다 죽음에 가까워질 뿐 아니라 사물을 생각하고 이해하는 힘이 먼저 멈추기 때문이다.

We ought to consider not only that our life is daily wasting away and a smaller part of it is left, but another thing also must be taken into the account, that if a man should live longer, it is quite uncertain whether the understanding will still continue sufficient for the comprehension of things, and retain the power of contemplation which strives to acquire the knowledge of the divine and the human. For if he shall begin to fall into dotage, perspiration and nutrition and imagination and appetite, and whatever else there is of the kind, will not fail; but the power of making use of ourselves, and filling up the measure of our duty, and clearly separating all appearances, and considering whether a man should now depart from life, and whatever else of the kind absolutely requires a disciplined reason, all this is already extinguished.
